Hypericum umbellatum A. Kern.

Flora Europaea

perennial, H

mesic calciphyle, upper nemoral belt

disjunct endemic (central-southern Apuseni Mountains / Carpathians south of Iron Gates area).

The populations concentrate at the very border between the shaded rock wall vegetation (Asperulo capitatae-Seslerietum rigidae) and the beech forests on limestone rocks (Phyllitidi-Fagetum) from the plateaus of the calcareous 'island' (klippa) mountains of the central-southern Apuseni (Valcan, Strutu, Stramba) so being an ecotone species. In some places like Plotunu massif which is a calcareous 'island' mountain situated between Stramba and Strutu mountains (which shelter populations of this species) H. umbellatum is missing and the places which should be populated by it is inhabited by H. hirsutum with which probably H. umbellatum is syntopic (has a similar ecological niche and replace one another through competition)

the limit between R4116/R3401 habitats

A species with a curious range disjunction which reminds that of Pedicularis limnogena (but which has a very different habitat - peat bogs) and one of the rarest and most characteristic plants of the calcareous 'klippa' massifs from the Apuseni Mountains.

Valcan massif, near Blajeni-Vulcan, Hunedoara county, July 2005
